FAQs
What is a Specialist Wellness Counsellor?
A Wellness Counsellor registered with the ASCHP is a trained practitioner with a relevant NQF Level 7 qualification. They provide supportive, preventative, and wellness-focused counselling. The role emphasises holistic wellbeing, personal growth, emotional support, and resilience, rather than diagnosis or treatment of mental illness.
Can you prescribe medication or diagnose mental illness?
No, both fall outside my scope of practice. If I suspect the need for diagnosis and/or medication, I refer clients to a trusted psychologist, doctor, or psychiatrist.
Can I use medical aid to cover sessions?
No. Medical aids do not cover sessions with ASCHP (Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners) registered practitioners or life coaches.
How do I choose between counselling or coaching?
Counselling may be more helpful if you’re feeling emotionally overwhelmed, stuck in distressing patterns, or needing to process past or present experiences. Counselling focuses on more on healing, insight, and support.
Coaching may be a good fit if you’re feeling reasonably stable but want help with clarity, goals, confidence, or creating change. It is more action- and future-focused.
If you’re unsure, that’s completely okay—many people are! In your intake session, we’ll work this out together.
I see you do Christian counselling. What if I’m not a Christian?
Part of my training in Christian counselling was learning how to best support people from all walks of life. My role is to come alongside you non-judgmentally. It’s completely up to you whether you would like to explore faith in our sessions or not.
What does confidentiality mean?
Confidentiality is a very important aspect of client care and ensures that I respect the privacy of my clients’ lives. This means everything that is said in the session remains between my client and myself. However, there are some specific limitations to this, which will be explored in your intake form and first session.
